Sensing and Active Safety Commitee (SAS)

Mission Statement: To provide a forum for AORC members to review, analyze and take action as an industry on the issues of pre-crash sensing and active accident avoidance strategies and products to reduce automobile accidents worldwide.

Strategy:
•  Review legislative and regulatory activities and determine needed areas of support and/or concern as well as associated actions
•  Coordinate activities with other Washington, DC organizations to provide a coalition to be more effective
•  As necessary, coordinate/perform studies, demonstrations, exhibits that may be beneficial in supporting active safety issues
•  Inform the general public of the benefits of active safety technologies and promote their use

Future Projects/Programs/Objectives - PROPOSED TASKS:
•  Review and analyze the list of government activities and strategies related to active safety; both current and future.
•  Prioritize above relative to industry implications and prepare action list
•  Identify areas of joint collaboration with government. Examples are:
      •  Conduct studies to identify/quantify the safety issues based on field data in an effort to understand societal benefits
      •  Conduct workshops/seminars to educate functionality of various active safety technologies
      •  Provide demonstration of future technologies in terms of their functionalities
      •  Help develop matrices to evaluate active safety technology effectiveness.
      •  Proactively participate in government sponsored programs
      •  Engage to influence evaluation measures/criteria for NCAP rating.
      •  Drive and evaluate regulations with appropriate criteria, tests, etc.
      •  Join forces with government in an effort to educate consumer.
•  Monitor worldwide regulatory activities
•  Promote global harmonization of regulations
•  Identify the scope of Active Safety products. Some examples are:
      •  Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
      •  Vehicle Autonomous Longitudinal Control (stop & go)
      •  Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
      •  Pre-Crash System: warning & preparation of occupant for potential crash
      •  Collision Warning Systems: Forward / Side / Rear??o Lane Change
             o Lane / Roadway Departure
             o Lane Keeping
             o Blind Spot Detection
             o Back-up / Parking Aid
             o Driver State Monitoring
•  Identify and coordinate activities with other organizations to provide a coalition to be more effective.
•  Report status/progress to AORC on regular basis
