Seat Belt Technical Committee

Mission Statement: The committee will provide technical support in the area of seat belts to support the broader objectives of the AORC.

Recent Accomplishments or Completed Projects:

• Prepared and hosted a technical session dedicated to Seat Belt Technology at the 2004 SAE Government/Industry Meeting in Washington D.C. The session was co-chaired with a representative from NHTSA.
• Made a presentation on Seat Belt Load Limiters to Brian O’Neill and his staff at the IIHS in Arlington, VA. This presentation was a follow –up to what Brian presented at the AORC Board of Director’s meeting in September of 2003.
• Developed a consolidated AORC response to the June 2004 NPRM for FMVSS 209. This NPRM for the “Seat Belt Locking Corridor” was based on the AORC original petition from June of 2000.
• Made a Seat Belt Technology presentation on “Active Safety” at the 84th Annual TRB meeting in Washington D.C.

Future Projects/Programs/Objectives:

1. FMVSS 209 NPRM
• Monitor the NHTSA progress on our committee response
• Follow-up on some instrumentation and data acquisition questions remaining from the development of our committee response

2. 2005 SAE Government / Industry Meeting
• Make a Seat Belt Technology presentation on “Pretensioning” as part of the technical session on Rollover/Crashworthiness

3. FMVSS 209 and TP 209:
• Develop a consolidated list of all changes desired for FMVSS/TP 209
• Address this list with NHTSA as additional changes that need to be made to the regulation and/or test procedures
